ESPN analyst claims Mike Tomlin's voice has "run stale" after 17 years of undefeated seasons.

Former Steelers Star Ryan Clark Discusses Mike Tomlin's Future as Head Coach

Over nearly twenty years as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike Tomlin has established himself as one of the most respected figures in professional football. His tenure includes a Super Bowl victory and the remarkable achievement of never posting a losing season since taking over in 2007. Despite these accomplishments, the franchise has faced persistent postseason struggles, having not won a playoff game in eight seasons.

In light of these recurring disappointments, conversations around Tomlin's future with the Steelers are gaining traction. Former Steelers safety and current NFL analyst Ryan Clark recently addressed the situation, emphasizing his belief that Tomlin should not be pressured out of his role. "I believe that Mike Tomlin is unfireable," Clark stated on ESPN. He asserted that if Tomlin's time in Pittsburgh comes to an end, it should happen on Tomlin’s terms.

However, Clark went on to suggest that both Tomlin and the organization might benefit from a new beginning elsewhere. According to Clark, “Mike Tomlin should coach in another organization. Mike Tomlin should be a fresh voice somewhere else. Because... as great a coach as he is, and he's a first-ballot Hall of Famer, I believe his voice has run stale there. I believe he's allowed that team to reach the highest of heights they're gonna reach, unless they can get a top-tier quarterback.”

The issue of quarterback performance looms large over the Steelers' prospects for improvement. With the departure of Mason Rudolph to the Tennessee Titans after the 2023 season, Pittsburgh's quarterback situation is far from settled. The options presently under contract include:

  • Skylar Thompson: A relative newcomer with limited starting experience.
  • Will Howard: Drafted in the sixth round, the rookie led Ohio State to a national championship just months ago.

Mason Rudolph, who started several games last season, logged nine touchdowns against nine interceptions—a testament to the instability at the position.

Adding intrigue to the offseason, the Steelers have pursued veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The four-time league MVP has reportedly met with team executives, though no official agreement has been reached regarding his playing future.

As the 2025 season approaches, all eyes are on the Steelers’ quarterback room and the longevity of Tomlin’s leadership. While Tomlin's consistency has been a hallmark of his time in Pittsburgh, the pressure to deliver postseason results is mounting. Whether he continues to lead the Steelers or seeks a new challenge elsewhere remains a key storyline for one of the NFL's most storied franchises.
